Winter time provides us with opportunities that many states don't have, such as ice fishing, skiing, building a snow hut to camp in. I encourage all our scouts to take the time to explore the various winter activites that you maybe haven't tried in the past, see if you like it. Encourage your leaders to try these as a troop event, or on a camping trip.

Hello, as the new scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 431 I want to take the opportunity to introduce myself. My Name is Eric Zierdt; I grew up a block from Birch Lake School and CTK Church; attended Birch Lake Elementary and graduated from WBL HS in 1995.
I join Pack 431 around 1984 as a Cub Scout, and worked my way around the Eagle Trail, which lead to my earning my Eagle Award from Troop 431 in 1994. Along the way I worked at Camp Tomahawk for 3 years and Camp Akela for 1 year.
I have met so many wonderful people and gained so many valuable life skills from Scouting that I want to give something back. So when I was told that the troop was looking for a new Scoutmaster I was excited to be able to fill the position.
I am looking forward to working with the Troop's SPL and leadership team to continue the high standards of our troop and to assist the next generation of scouts as they work towards their Eagle Scout Awards.

As the new year approaches....
Well, Scouts, did you make any New Year's resolutions? I hope some of you resolved to bring up your grades in school and be more helpful around the house. I'm sure your parents would be delighted with those resolutions.
In Scouting, we make a resolution almost every time we meet. Each time we repeat the Scout Oath or Law, we're resolving to do our best to do our duty and to make ourselves the best citizens we can be. I'm inclined to think that resolving to follow the Scout Oath and Law are the most important resolutions you can make - now and in the time to come. The Oath and Law cover almost everything that makes a good man and a good citizen.
Yours in Scouting,
Jim

Once there was a man who said some things about a friend that were neither true nor complimentary. Afterwards, he felt ashamed and went to his friend and apologized. Still, as he walked around town, he could hear the false words being repeated. Troubled by this, he went to the wisest man in the community.
"How can I undo this terrible wrong that I did", he asked the wise man. The wise man thought for a moment and said, "Bring me a feather pillow." The man did so and quickly returned. "Now go to the hilltop outside of town, slit open the pillowcase, and shake it until all of the feathers are gone." Again, the man quickly did as he was instructed. When he returned to the wise man, the wise man said, "Now go and pick up every single feather and place them all back into the pillowcase." The man replied, "But that's impossible. There is no way that I can find all those feathers and put them back." "Indeed," answered the wise man, "and there is no way to gather back the words that you cast into the air either."
And so it is. Once we speak, we can never gather the words back into the pillowcase. So it is important to think about what we are going to say before we cast our words into the wind.
Yours in Scouting,
Terry
